Pasifika Representation Takes Center Stage at Moana 2 Premiere

Burbank, Ca – December 5, 2024 – The Walt Disney Studios was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Pasifika culture as the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (PEAK) hosted a special premiere of Moana 2, inviting distinguished guests from the NHPI (Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander) creative community. Among them was Talia Thompson, Founder of TFF and Tusitala Productions, whose mission aligns with PEAK’s vision of expanding Pasifika representation in entertainment.

The night was more than just a film premiere—it was a historic gathering of Pasifika talent, creators, and advocates. The iconic Disney lot, typically home to some of the most well-known cinematic projects, was filled with the energy, voices, and pride of the Pasifika community. Attendees shared space, connected, and reveled in the moment as their stories unfolded on the big screen.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Talia described the experience as deeply moving:

“It was an incredibly powerful and emotional experience. To be in a space where our people—our storytellers, artists, musicians, and filmmakers—were celebrated on such a grand stage was both inspiring and affirming. It reminded me of why I do what I do—because our stories matter, and they deserve to be seen and heard on the biggest platforms.”

The film’s success at the box office was met with an even greater outpouring of love and support from the NHPI community. Talia emphasized the importance of these moments, not just as victories in representation, but as milestones in a larger movement:

“I am constantly inspired by the resilience, creativity, and deep sense of responsibility that so many of my peers carry. We all share a commitment to ensuring that our culture is represented with authenticity and respect. It’s a reminder that we’re stronger when we work together, and that every project, every story told, adds to a larger movement of reclaiming our narratives.”

Yet, the journey does not end here. While Moana 2 broke records and shattered expectations, Talia acknowledged the ongoing need for diverse storytelling that goes beyond mainstream animated films:

“It’s not every day we get to witness the glass ceiling shatter for our NHPI community. But this is just one piece of the larger puzzle. We need more stories—stories told by us, for us, across all genres. Representation isn’t just about visibility; it’s about agency.”

As 2024 draws to a close, the momentum for Pasifika representation continues to grow. Looking ahead to 2025, the focus remains on expanding opportunities for Pacific Islander filmmakers, writers, and executives in decision-making roles.

“The work is far from over, and I’m committed to continuing the fight for meaningful representation in media,” Talia affirmed.

The premiere of Moana 2 was more than just a celebration—it was a declaration. Pasifika creatives are here, their voices are powerful, and their stories are shaping the future of entertainment.
