TFF Launches The Next Wave Workshop
Kahuku, HI – January 16, 2025 – The To'omalatai Family Foundation (TFF) successfully launched its first-ever Next Wave Workshop, a hands-on media experience designed to equip participants with the skills necessary to thrive in creative industries such as cinematography, directing, and photography.
As part of TFF’s mission to provide educational tools and resources to the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) community pursuing careers in sports and storytelling, the Next Wave Workshop serves as a stepping stone for aspiring creatives. Over the past three months, TFF collaborated closely with the dedicated staff at Kahuku to plan and execute this impactful initiative.
Next Wave Workshop Participant:
“My key takeaway from the event is how putting yourself out of your comfort zone can open new opportunities.”
Students arrived eager to explore creative career paths and discover how their passions can translate into sustainable professions. The workshop featured three specialized stations led by industry professionals:

Directing & Producing with Talia Thompson
Each mentor shared their personal experiences navigating the creative field, encouraging students to step outside their comfort zones. One participant reflected, “My key takeaway from the event is how putting yourself out of your comfort zone can open new opportunities.”
Throughout the session, students received hands-on training in camera operation, directing techniques, and creative storytelling—gaining insights directly from seasoned professionals. Even as the workshop concluded, the enthusiasm remained high. TFF reassured students that the foundation will continue to be a valuable resource, supporting them as they pursue careers aligned with their passions.
The Next Wave Workshop marks the beginning of an ongoing initiative to empower the next generation of NHPI creatives.
